Bellapais & Lawrence Durrell
The 13th-century cloister and the book that made it legible.
Read →Defining Mediterranean Luxury
One hundred essays on North Cyprus — Gothic architecture, ancient gastronomy, and the quiet luxury of an island that rewards the prepared mind.
100 Essays · One Standard · No Compromise
I studied at METU. I learned there that imprecise language is epistemologically limiting — that the word you choose shapes the thought you can have, and the thought you can have shapes the encounter you are capable of. This applies to travel writing as much as it applies to anything else.
Most travel content tells you where to go and what to see. The Cyprus Gusto tells you how to look — and why the looking matters. The visitor who arrives at Bellapais having read Durrell encounters a different building from the visitor who arrives with only a review. The island gives both the same stone. It does not give them the same encounter.
Before anything appears on this platform, I apply three questions: architectural and cultural honesty, cultural continuity, and lasting change in the person who encounters it. One hundred essays later, I am still asking the same questions. The island continues to pass all three.
